Boom Special Edition steps into focus as BastichB 64K highlights this rebuilt and greatly expanded Commodore 64 shooter, arriving in December 2025. The original game never reached many players in the early nineties, but this refreshed edition aims to reach the audience it always deserved.

A Rare Shooter Returns After Decades

The first Boom was created by Frank and Andre Hugenroth between 1989 and 1993 under their Brainstorm Amazing Software label. By the time it was ready, the C64 market had nearly vanished. Only fifteen physical copies were sold, leaving the project buried and the developers shifting to Amiga work.

Now, with the blessing of the Hugenroth brothers, programmer Multimund has rebuilt the game from the ground up. His work fixes long-standing issues, updates the presentation, and reshapes the experience for modern C64 players. Boom Special Edition brings the original vision forward with a smoother and more balanced design.

Expanded Action for Shooter Fans

Boom Special Edition draws inspiration from Catacus, R-Type, and Crossout. The setup takes place in 2197 on Blue Moon, a research colony turned dangerous after a catastrophic accident mutates the population. Seven long stages appear, each split into two parts, with fourteen bosses standing between the player and victory.

The biggest update comes from new difficulty modes. The early nineties version used one-hit deaths, creating frustration even for skilled players. The new version introduces an energy bar. On easier settings, ships can survive up to seven hits. Bosses no longer sponge damage endlessly, and shield upgrades appear sooner, giving the pacing a steadier flow.

Weapons and Upgrades Feel Far Better

Players can collect seven ship upgrades and four main weapon types. These include multi-shot upgrades, shields, backfire attacks, lightning bursts, huge laser beams, and an orbiting orb system reminiscent of Catacus. Each upgrade brings a satisfying boost, and Boom Special Edition makes these tools easier to access without removing challenge.

Sharper Presentation and Cartridge-Speed Loading

New intro screens, level art, and intermission graphics give the game a fresh look. The SID soundtrack keeps the spirit of the original compositions while adding polish inspired by classic Chris Huelsbeck work.

The cartridge version nearly eliminates loading times, making the game feel far more responsive.

Boom Special Edition arrives in mid December 2025 from Polyplay in both physical cartridge and digital formats, ready for emulators and real hardware. Players can secure the physical edition through Polyplay’s product page.
