A1200Net Mechanical Keyboard Preview: Jan Beta’s Amiga Exclusive

180

Jan Beta offers a world-exclusive first look at the A1200Net Mechanical Keyboard, a new hardware project designed for nearly all Amiga models. In this video, he unboxes and tests one of only two existing prototypes, giving Amiga enthusiasts a clear view of what’s coming.

The A1200Net Mechanical Keyboard is more than a modern replacement. It brings the authentic Amiga typing experience back, this time with custom-made linear mechanical switches modeled after the original Mitsumi hybrids. These new switches promise durability and smoother performance while staying true to the Amiga’s feel and layout.

Jan explains that the keyboard fits multiple Amiga systems, from the A1200 and A500 to the 2000, 3000, and 4000, with an optional controller board for compatibility. The only model excluded is the A600, though a version may follow if there’s enough demand.

Despite minor quirks typical of a pre-production unit—such as a slightly thick backplate and loose keycaps—the keyboard already shows impressive quality. Once installed in his Amiga 1200, Jan demonstrates its function and confirms that it works flawlessly. The sound and response closely match the original keyboards, only sturdier and more refined.

The final version will feature all-black PCBs, improved switch retention, and the option to use both original and A1200Net keycaps. Preorders open at €89 without keycaps or €129 with them, which Jan calls a fair price for an all-new, custom-built Amiga keyboard.

As production nears, this A1200Net Mechanical Keyboard represents an exciting step forward for retro computing fans looking to restore or upgrade their machines with authentic, high-quality components.
