Amiga Clone Build Rivals Upcoming A1200 Release

Phil Kruman has a new episode of his ReTech series and revisits his four-year-old Amiga clone build just as Retro Games announces pre-orders for its new A1200 console. In his latest video, Phil showcases his custom A500-based recreation that functions as nearly every Amiga model ever made—including the A500, A1200, A1000, and CDTV.

From the outside, the system looks like a standard Amiga 500, but inside it’s a modern reimagining powered by a Raspberry Pi. It runs Workbench with HDMI output, internal SD storage, and full keyboard and joystick support. Phil demonstrates its smooth performance and quick boot times, comparing it favorably to original Amiga hardware. The system handles games and utilities with ease, making it a capable stand-in for multiple classic machines.

The Amiga clone build also highlights Phil’s thoughts on preservation. He explains that while original hardware ages and becomes unreliable, these modern recreations extend the life of classic computing experiences. His case restoration method has even kept the chassis color intact for years, avoiding the yellowing issues seen with older systems.

Phil is enthusiastic about pre-ordering the official A1200 from Retro Games, even though his setup already outperforms what’s expected from the new release. He plans to compare both systems once the A1200 arrives and might even re-release his original build video in higher quality.

This Amiga clone build stands as a perfect mix of nostalgia and practicality—original design blended with modern reliability. Phil also teases future videos featuring his Atari ST, BBC Micro, and Commodore 128 projects, promising more deep looks into retro systems reborn for today’s setups.
