Chaotic Crazy Castle: Amiga 500 Platformer Built in Two Weeks

183

Chaotic Crazy Castle is a quirky Amiga 500 platformer created by Alberto Sgaggero under his Fourseasons label. Written entirely in AMOS BASIC, this short and energetic project—built in just two weeks—captures the spirit of early 8-bit adventure titles while adding a comical twist.

Players control a pint-sized mage with a rather large hat on a mission to collect magical herbs. His goal? To brew a potion that will finally make him taller. The game’s structure feels like a nod to Matthew Smith’s classics Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy, and it sprinkles in a few visual cues reminiscent of Nintendo’s Castlevania.

Each room of Chaotic Crazy Castle offers its own hazards and challenges. Players must navigate patrolling spirits and master the use of magical tiles. Some tiles let the mage leap upward through platforms, others automatically push him sideways or downward. A few, however, spell instant doom. Quick reflexes and memory become vital as you move deeper into the castle’s quirky rooms.

The gameplay mechanics are simple but addictive. You can move the mage with a joystick or arrow keys and jump with the fire button or spacebar. Every collected herb brings you closer to completing the wizard’s potion.

In true hobbyist spirit, Sgaggero offers the game for free, though he’s clear that Chaotic Crazy Castle is provided “as is.” It may run smoothly on emulators, but real Amiga hardware could present surprises. That honesty fits perfectly with the project’s lighthearted tone—this is an experiment in retro creativity, not a polished commercial release.

Fans of homemade Amiga projects or old-school platformers will find Chaotic Crazy Castle worth a play and a smile.
