Open Geometry Wars for AmigaOS 4.1 FE brings a classic arcade challenge to modern Amiga fans. Originally developed by Peter Hirschberg and capehill, this open-source shooter receives a faithful port thanks to George Sokianos, known as walkero. Open Geometry Wars aims to capture the fast-paced gameplay of Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, complete with vivid visuals and frantic action.
To get started, players simply extract the archive and launch the opengw binary. Selecting ships is quick—tap keys 1 to 4 to choose both ship and color, then press 1 again to begin with a white ship. The port’s multiplayer support remains limited, reflecting the original game, so single-player mode is recommended for now.
Gameplay and Controls
Players move their ship with the WASD keys, firing in any direction using the cursor keys. The game supports various display and visual options, toggled with function keys. These range from enabling or disabling VSync and glow effects, to adjusting grid and particle smoothing. F10 swaps between fullscreen and windowed mode, while F8 and F1 can help boost performance on slower hardware by disabling the grid and VSync.
Special Thanks and Community
The project is built on a strong foundation of open-source collaboration. Peter Hirschberg’s original code, capehill’s ongoing work with SDL for AmigaOS 4.1 FE, and contributions from BeWorld, papiosaur, and Michael Trebilcock have all helped shape this release. Community testing is encouraged, especially for controller support, which currently remains a work in progress.
Ongoing Development
Walkero actively updates the game, with the first public AmigaOS 4.1 FE release marked as version 1.1. Known issues and further progress are tracked on the project’s Git page. Feedback is welcomed, particularly regarding controller compatibility.
Open Geometry Wars invites AmigaOS 4.1 users to experience a blast of retro energy with modern convenience and a few fresh twists. This port keeps the arcade spirit alive while staying friendly to both newcomers and veteran players.
