How to Connect a Commodore 64 to Modern TV

In today’s episode, Just Jamie demonstrates the easiest way to connect a Commodore 64C or Commodore 64 Breadbin to a modern TV.

To connect a C64 to a contemporary TV, it’s important to note that the Commodore 64, whether it’s the 64C model from 1985 or the Breadbin model from 1982, isn’t naturally compatible with most modern TVs, especially those made in the last 15 years. However, the easiest and most affordable solution, without modifying the Commodore 64 itself, involves purchasing a few specific items. Jamie provides links to these in the video description.

First, one needs to buy a high-quality cable, such as the one from Retro Computer Shack, available on eBay. Jamie has used these multiple times and attests to their quality. Next, an AV2 HDMI or RCA to HDMI conversion box is required. This box needs power, typically provided via a USB connection. If the TV has USB ports, simply plug the box into one of them. If not, a plug adapter for USB power can be used.

At the back of the Commodore 64, the Retro Computer Shack cable should be connected to the video output, while the conversion box connects easily to the TV. The HDMI cable then runs from the conversion box to the TV. Once everything is connected, turning on the Commodore 64 will display the output on the TV screen. This method avoids modifying the Commodore 64, preserving its value.

The HDMI box offers 720p and 1080p options, though Jamie mentions that the difference in quality between the two is minimal. To test the setup, Jamie runs a basic sound test by typing in some code, and verifying that the sound works correctly through the conversion process.

To conclude, Jamie encourages viewers to subscribe, hit notifications, and like the video to stay updated on retro emulation content. Social media handles on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok are also shared, with a final reminder to “stay retro.”
