Alicia 1200 Mini-ITX Amiga Preview

227

The Alicia 1200 is a Mini-ITX recreation of the Amiga 1200 AGA mainboard, offering full chipset compatibility in a compact format. Shoe’s Workbench provides an early look at version 1.4, created by Mr. Anderson.

From Lisa to Alicia

Originally called Lisa, the board has been in development for over a decade. After strong feedback from his Denise project, Anderson committed to making the Alicia 1200 widely available. Earlier versions included a PCMCIA slot on the mainboard, but later revisions relocated it to a riser on the Tornado expansion slot. Now, the PCMCIA slot returns to the mainboard and works without issue.

Video and Expansion Features

The Alicia 1200 features a video slot similar to the Amiga 4000’s, carrying all digital signals. This slot supports an internal scan doubler that connects directly, allowing easy switching between 15 kHz and 31 kHz output via the VGA port. An internal switch handles the change without external adapters.

Expansion options remain strong. The Tornado slot provides a local bus interface like the A3000 and A4000. The board includes a clock port, buffered IDE, and space for an RTC. Parallel and serial ports are provided on headers to save space.

Modern Layout, Classic Functionality

The Alicia 1200 uses a standard ATX power connector and retains the original A1200 RAM circuits. Most SMD components arrive pre-installed. The design now uses three separate microcontrollers for keyboard, ROM, and power management, creating a more modular system.

Amiga enthusiasts who want a compact, modern version of the A1200 without losing authenticity will appreciate the Alicia 1200. With integrated PCMCIA, internal scan doubler support, and well-planned hardware, it feels like a natural continuation of the Amiga tradition.
