The AmiGUS sound upgrade is here for Zorro-based Amigas, delivering advanced audio to classic machines. Hardware engineer Oliver Achten led development, while Alinea Computer handles production and support. Together they created a sound card that combines modern features with retro compatibility.
AmiGUS focuses on high-quality sound reproduction and music creation. With a built-in hardware synthesizer, advanced mixer, and codec chip, the card reaches 24-bit, 192kHz performance across multiple formats.
Features at a Glance
AmiGUS connects to Amiga 2000, 3000, and 4000 systems through the Zorro II bus. It includes RCA stereo and TOSLINK optical outputs, both capable of 192kHz at 24-bit.
Three analog inputs accept audio from Paula, CD-ROM drives, or external devices. A hardware mixer processes signals at full resolution. The AHI driver interface ensures smooth playback and recording in 8-, 16-, and 24-bit modes.
The dedicated decoder chip supports MP3, OGG, FLAC, and WMA. A powerful DMA stream buffer helps maintain steady playback. Musicians benefit from the 32-channel wavetable engine with interpolation, ADSR envelopes, stereo panning, and 32 MB of onboard sample memory. This makes the card well-suited for MIDI sequencing and sample tracking.
Open Hardware Design
AmiGUS is an open hardware project. PCB layouts, FPGA bitstreams, and supporting software are available to the public. Updates to the FPGA core can be made through JTAG or a flash tool on the Amiga.
The card saves user preferences with flash-based storage. Mixer settings reload automatically during startup, helping users maintain consistent workflows.
System Requirements
The card runs on an Amiga 2000 with a 68000 CPU, 1 MB chip RAM, and 4 MB fast RAM under Workbench 1.3.
For best performance, use an Amiga 2000, 3000, or 4000 with a 68030 CPU at 25 MHz, 2 MB chip RAM, and 16 MB fast RAM running Workbench 3.9 or 3.2.2.
Each AmiGUS package includes the card, printed instructions in German and English, and a Paula adapter for video slot connection.
Raising Amiga Audio Standards
The AmiGUS sound upgrade lifts Amiga audio to a professional level. With its advanced specifications, open design, and long-term support, it expands the creative possibilities for musicians and users who rely on classic hardware.
