VirtualAssets has released a new video showcasing the Axion 3D engine running on an Amiga 4000 via UAE. The demonstration highlights the progress of Axion, a 3D tactical strategy game still in development. It’s an impressive example of how far software rendering can go on classic Amiga hardware.
The Axion 3D engine uses only CPU-based rendering, without any hardware acceleration. It supports AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS 4.1, MorphOS, and emulated systems like WinUAE. Players command squads of combat units in deep-space battles, where timing and tactical choices decide the outcome. The latest video shows smoother camera movement and more stable frame performance than earlier builds.
The developer continues to refine performance, focusing on stability and efficiency. The game runs with as little as a Motorola 68040 processor and 8 MB of RAM, though a 68060 at 100 MHz or faster is recommended for better visuals. These optimizations allow the engine to deliver a smooth experience even on older Amiga setups.
A full version of Axion is planned to include ten missions, offering around ten hours of strategy-driven gameplay. Development is expected to continue for another six months. Future updates will improve mission design and expand tactical options.
A mission editor is also planned, allowing players to create and share their own custom levels. This feature will extend replay value and build a creative Amiga community around the project. Supporters who follow progress on itch.io can gain early access to test builds and new features as they appear.
The developer describes Axion as both an experiment and a celebration of Amiga programming. The Axion 3D engine proves that creative coding and passion can still bring new life to classic platforms.
