BASLOAD: A Unique Approach to BASIC Exclusive to Commander X16

64

Stefan Jakobsson exclusively developed X16EDIT and BASLOAD, two integral tools for the Commander X16 platform.

  • X16EDIT is a robust, full-featured text editor designed to run natively on the 6502-based X16, offering a seamless editing experience.
  • BASLOAD facilitates the conversion of plain-text, “QuickBASIC-like” code into native X16 BASIC. This innovative tool supports long variable names, symbolic labels, and eliminates the need for line numbers, greatly enhancing coding flexibility.

Both tools are meticulously crafted in assembly language and are embedded within the Commander X16 System ROM. As a result, they are readily available via the CMDR-DOS command line, providing users with built-in, high-performance solutions.

This video serves as a beginner-friendly introduction to the fundamentals of BASIC programming. It includes a demonstration of how BASLOAD can be used to integrate and enhance legacy BASIC code. Additional topics covered include using the CBM BASIC “screen editor,” understanding tokenized BASIC, and exploring the X16 memory map.
