Ole Mogensen’s Bonkers C64 Preview reveals a spirited 20-screen platformer that blends classic action with clever environmental twists. The game stars Bear Bob, whose tropical flight goes terribly wrong after a lightning strike sends him crashing into a strange and hostile land. From that moment, the bear’s mission is simple yet perilous: survive, explore, and make it back to Coconut Island to reunite with his family.
The Bonkers C64 Preview video gives players an early glimpse of Bob’s tools and trials. Armed with coconut bombs, water balloons, and a parachute, Bob must navigate hazardous terrain filled with traps, fire, and unfriendly creatures. Each stage challenges the player to collect five keys to unlock the exit while managing limited resources and reacting quickly to dynamic hazards.
As the Bonkers C64 Preview continues, the charm of its retro design becomes clear. Bombs can ignite grass, forcing Bob to use water balloons to douse the flames before they spread. Certain blocks can be destroyed to open new passages, while others hide spikes, mines, or deadly surprises. A color-changing frame doubles as a timer, warning the player when it’s time to move faster or risk explosive mines spawning.
Complementing Mogensen’s design are vivid loading screens by Joachim “The Sarge” Ljunggren and a lively SID soundtrack by Thomas “Laxity” Egeskov Petersen. Though still in progress, Bonkers already showcases a playful mix of challenge, humor, and retro flair that promises another standout addition to the Commodore 64 scene.
