Greg Naçu’s presentation at World of Commodore 2024 showcased the latest advancements in C64 OS, including version 1.07, which introduces a full networking stack, five new applications, seven utilities, and multiple system enhancements.
Key updates include hidden file support, a memo pad, improved text editing, directory filtering, and loadable keyboard drivers. New applications such as Eliza (a chatbot), Visualizer (a SID music player), Desktop Designer (a PETSCII graphics editor), and a Wikipedia client were demonstrated.
A major highlight was the introduction of fast app switching, allowing users with RAM Expansion Units (REU) to quickly switch between applications. Naçu also introduced online services via the Commodore Network Protocol (CNP), enabling internet connectivity for C64 users, with optional cloud-hosted services available for a subscription.
The live demonstration showcased features like customizable desktops, application editing, and online browsing with Wikipedia, proving that the Commodore 64 continues to evolve well beyond its original hardware limitations.
