After years of love from the Commodore 64 crowd, Color 64 BBS gets a fresh update thanks to a serious overhaul by Nuke, the Sysop of Itchybutt BBS. Version 8.1a isn’t just a tune-up—it brings back some long-missing features and introduces new ones that give sysops more control and users a smoother experience. It’s now easier than ever to get a BBS up and running, whether you’re using an SD2IEC setup or sticking with the more traditional multi-drive layout.

What’s Inside the Update

The release includes two ready-to-use versions:

  • SD2IEC Pre-Built: This one’s for users who run their C64 setup with an SD2IEC device. It’s a simple, zip-and-go option.
  • Traditional Build: Includes all the files sorted by expected drive locations, zipped up with D64 disk images for those sticking with the classic configuration.

Both builds come with a full document folder, including a revised Sysop manual. Appendix G is a must-read before you start your install—skipping it could mean headaches later.

Fixes and Restored Features

Version 8.1a clears up several issues left behind by the original 8.1 release:

  • Networking support is back.
  • Sysop chat works again.
  • Directory tools and the file editor are up and running.
  • The XXX message base has been retooled to match the current format—it had been left behind in the last update.

New Features That Matter

This release doesn’t just patch things—it adds plenty of new tools to work with:

  • Email notifications for users, with a Python 3 script included for setup on a separate networked system.
  • A Sysop In/Out flag, so callers know if the operator’s around.
  • Fresh screen additions: welcome screen, graffiti wall, status indicators, and user notification panels.
  • A new games section using AUX3, with its own menu.
  • User profile editor, letting users tweak their signature, splash screen, and basic info.
  • Fast logon when using the local console.
  • Auto-signatures for messages.
  • A help menu for DOS Wedge commands.
  • Random sayings at login, adding some personality before the prompt.
  • More overlay routines, making the whole experience more customizable.
  • Sysop uploads to any drive, including options that allow work on the BBS remotely.
