Commander X16 Plays 320×240 Video with Audio at 16fps

Anthony Henry has posted a fresh video update showing just how far the Commander X16 can be pushed—this time with high-resolution video playback and audio that doesn’t skip a beat. Using 320×240 video running at 16 frames per second, paired with 32kHz 8-bit audio, the demonstration proves the system has enough muscle for more than just pixel art and BASIC demos.

The footage is clear, stable, and surprisingly smooth for a system built around the simplicity of 8-bit computing. No trickery or external hardware expansions—this is running natively on the X16. The audio holds steady too, streaming cleanly at 32kHz without distortion or dropouts.

What stands out most is how balanced the performance is. While many retro-style machines struggle to juggle video and sound, the X16 delivers both in stride. It’s a solid showcase of the platform’s capabilities and a nod to the growing community of developers experimenting with more demanding media formats on retro-style systems.

For anyone curious about how far the Commander X16 can go—or just looking for a quick hit of impressive 8-bit engineering—this is a video worth checking out.

Kind of stoked to see this here. Maybe I didn’t have it in my Video description but this Video wouldn’t have happened at this resolution without Eirik from the X16 DISCORD providing me with SPI direct SD-Card access code. I’m skipping on the file system with this demo.
