The Commander X16 Pre-Order window has officially opened, marking a milestone moment for the highly anticipated retro computer. TexElec now accepts pre-orders with shipping scheduled to begin on February 29, 2024. Payment will only be charged when units ship, giving fans peace of mind while securing their place in line.
Production of another 1,000 systems is already underway, bringing the Commander X16 closer to widespread availability. Each motherboard requires 321 parts, sourced from vendors including Mouser Electronics and the Western Design Center, with PCBWay providing discounted boards.
Beyond the Commander X16 Pre-Order excitement, the team showcased several new hardware and software developments. The latest Lazer3D case features improved alignment, lighting buttons, and a right-angle expansion slot for cartridges and external devices. A new riser card and secondary video card now support multi-monitor setups—up to five displays running independently.
On the software side, the system gains modernized BASIC tools, including a Nano-style text editor, new graphics and sound commands, and the ability to compile code directly from the X16. Paul Robson’s “Blitz” compiler boosts program performance up to 30 times faster. Several built-in programs, like a sprite editor, hex editor, and firmware updater, are also ready for use.
The long-term vision for the Commander X16 extends beyond hobbyists. Creator David Murray envisions it as a creative, educational platform for kids—a safe environment that encourages learning to code without the distractions of modern online life.
