Commodore 64 Raycasting Demo by Piotr Kózka: Grey Engine Updates

794

Piotr Kózka, a programmer with a passion for pushing the Commodore 64’s limits, has shared his latest work—a raycasting demo built using a modified version of the Grey Engine. This project showcases the balance between performance and visual fidelity on one of the most resource-constrained platforms in gaming history.

The demo runs in multi-color character mode, featuring a limited yet effective five-color palette. It operates at a resolution of 80×50, achieved through 4×4-pixel blocks, with 80 rays cast across the screen. The frame rate typically hovers around 12–13 FPS, peaking at 16–17 FPS during less intensive scenes. While this approach sacrifices some speed compared to the original engine, it offers noticeably sharper visuals.

The music, sourced from the original Grey demo and composed by Kamil Wolnikowski (@jammerc64), adds another layer of immersion, blending seamlessly with the atmospheric visuals.
