Commodore 64 Software Smartphone: How to Call and Send Text Messages

29

In this new episode from Triple Freedom, the team proudly claims to be the first in the world to have a Commodore 64 manage incoming phone calls and text messages.

The episode showcases their GSM phone modem, which connects to the Commodore 64’s user port. This setup allows for making calls, sending and receiving text messages, and even sending basic text emails.

The team guides viewers through the entire process. First, they connect the modem to an external power source. Then, they power up their 1541 emulator and load the essential software, “SimCom 64,” a simple yet effective program developed by their talented friend, Timo V.

Next, the team loads the driver that communicates through the user port and enters the SIM card’s PIN, which has been set up for the new phone line. From there, they can handle phone calls, access the address book, and read or write SMS messages—all using the Commodore 64.

Finally, they demonstrate receiving a text message live and responding in real time.
