Custom Floppy Emulator Build for Denise Amiga

151

Hack Build Restore returns with an ambitious new project: creating a custom floppy emulator build for the Denise Amiga system. What begins as a straightforward hardware adjustment quickly transforms into a full design challenge, showcasing both setbacks and problem-solving ingenuity.

The issue arises when attempting to fit a network card alongside the Terrible Fire accelerator inside Denise’s compact case. Standard placement is impossible, so a custom riser board is designed to fold the card neatly at 90 degrees. The first attempt has footprint issues, yet proves the theory works. A revised version corrects the spacing while keeping ports aligned with the rear I/O.

However, another conflict emerges. The floppy cable clashes with the new riser and network card combination, eliminating room for a stock Gotek emulator. The solution? Build a custom floppy emulator build tailored for Denise. Using schematics, reverse engineering, and component rearrangement, Hack Build Restore designs a new board that fits perfectly within the tight case constraints.

Assembly is far from simple. Incorrect resistor values block USB detection, and display output issues demand fixes to the I²C wiring. After bodge wires and careful corrections, the emulator flashes firmware successfully and integrates with the Amiga 500 Plus for testing. It functions as a fully working floppy drive replacement.

The final stack combines the Terrible Fire accelerator, hard drive, network card, and custom emulator inside the Denise case. All hardware runs without performance loss, confirming the project’s success. While some refinements remain, the build is already show-ready for its debut at Amiga Belfast.

This episode highlights the balance of trial, error, and persistence needed to bring unique Amiga hardware ideas to life. The full process, including design mistakes, fixes, and working results, can be seen in the video.
