Doctor Hell Invasion Unleashes Retro Chaos on the Commodore 64

185

KabutoCoder’s Doctor Hell Invasion brings fast-paced arcade mayhem to the Commodore 64. In this latest release, players take control of Koji Kabuto as the notorious Dr. Hell storms the Photonic Laboratory. The focus keyphrase Doctor Hell Invasion sets the tone for a pixel-packed clash between humanity’s defenders and mechanical madness.

Baron Ashura, the Headless Count, and an army of Iron Masks descend on the lab, leaving Koji scrambling to collect 16 giant batteries per level. These power sources are vital to repairing Mazinger but transform into volatile bombs the moment they hit the hangar floor. Collect them quickly or risk explosive consequences.

Strategic Chaos and Survival

The challenge of Doctor Hell Invasion lies in timing and precision. Koji must move across multiple floors using elevators, dodge incoming enemies, and keep his energy from draining. Losing all energy forces a restart, adding pressure to every move.

A freeze ray gun appears randomly in each stage, offering a brief tactical advantage. It halts enemies for five seconds, giving Koji time to grab batteries or reposition safely. The hangar’s ever-changing layout and limited weapon use make every second count.

Built With Passion and Community

KabutoCoder developed the game using the AGPX Game Maker engine (version 2.2.1), transpiling from BASIC to C and compiling with Oscar 64 by Dr. Mortal Wombat. The project’s artistry comes from Adrián Bonnette, who designed the in-game visuals and Mazinger intro sprites, while Narciso Quintana composed four SID tracks that capture the energy of the classic anime.

Programming assistance came from Dirk Roosen, known for titles like El Cartero and Hipofruta, who offered tips on memory optimization and sprite multiplexing. Testing and feedback were handled by Commodore enthusiasts Pedro Urán and Daniel Melendez, ensuring the final product feels authentic on real hardware.
