Retro Tech Insanity has released a new video reviewing an innovative modification for the Commodore 128 that boosts the Z80 processor’s speed to 8MHz, effectively doubling its performance.
This enhancement is achieved through a simple daughterboard, a GAL chip, and a 74LS74, allowing the Z80 to operate at the dot clock frequency (nearly 8MHz) during the system’s 1MHz phase, resulting in a significant speed increase.
Benchmarks written in Turbo Pascal confirm that the performance is roughly doubled, making CP/M noticeably faster and, for the first time, highly usable.
