Piotr Kózka is back with something that’ll make C64 fans do a double-take—a C64 racing game in first person. Still in early development, this work-in-progress already shows promise, offering a surprising mix of nostalgia and technical ambition. The project is rolling along with a simple but effective track system, featuring slopes and curves that bend and twist across a horizontally scrolling background. The driving mechanics are basic for now, but they’re enough to give players a taste of what’s coming.
The current version of this C64 racing game focuses on core functionality and visual flow. The background scrolls smoothly from side to side, giving a genuine sense of speed and direction. While vertical scrolling isn’t implemented yet, it’s already on Piotr’s to-do list. Other goals include creating a new track system that supports larger, more dynamic levels and adding interactive game objects like traffic cars and roadside chevron signs.
It’s exciting to watch a C64 racing game like this unfold in real time, especially one that’s pushing the hardware in new directions. Commodore 64 development continues to surprise, even four decades later.
