Developer NemanjaV demonstrates his game Mushrooms that Grow in the Woods, a newly released, free-to-download Commodore 64 game inspired by classic maze-muncher titles from the 1980s and 1990s.

This new Commodore 64 game, Mushrooms that Grow in the Woods, is inspired by Pac-Man and the many maze-muncher clones popular in the 1980s and 1990s. It also draws elements from various other classic arcade and puzzle games, which seasoned retro gamers will recognize.

The objective is simple collect (or “eat”) all the mushrooms on each level while avoiding traps and enemies. The game includes 32 progressively challenging levels, each designed to offer a unique experience. Points are awarded for every successful action, such as collecting mushrooms or defeating enemies. Detailed instructions can be found on the game disk in the README.PRG file.

The game was originally developed on a real Commodore 64 using the Turbo Macro Pro assembler, later transitioning to a Windows PC with the TMPx cross assembler. It has been tested on a real PAL C64 as well as on various emulated setups using CCS64 and VICE emulators on Windows and Linux. While it should work on most emulators, no guarantees can be made. For the best experience, playing on a real C64 or C128 is recommended.

You can download the game here.
