Artline Designs has introduced a new multiplayer experience for the Commodore 64 with Kuusneppis, a digital take on the Finnish outdoor sport, Neppis. This game recreates the excitement of racing small plastic cars across hand-built sand tracks, bringing the challenge indoors while keeping the competitive spirit alive.
Up to six players can join in on a single C64, each using just one button on a joystick or keyboard. The mechanics are simple but require careful timing. In traditional Neppis, players use a flick of their fingers to propel their cars forward—a move known as a “nep.” In Kuusneppis, this action is replicated by pressing and holding a button to move a hand towards the car. When the nep power indicator appears, releasing and quickly pressing again at the peak of the indicator’s strength gives the car maximum propulsion. A strong nep can even send the car soaring over obstacles like mud patches that would otherwise slow it down.
Racing isn’t just about speed—it’s about endurance. Each player has a stamina bar displayed on the left side of the screen. Overuse drains stamina, leading to weaker neps. To recover, players must release the button, though this also pulls their hand away from the car. The challenge is balancing aggression with recovery to maintain a competitive edge.
The goal is simple: be among the first to cross the finish line and earn a spot on the winner’s podium. While the competition is fierce, the golden rule remains—play fair, have fun, and don’t break your Commodore 64 in the heat of the moment!
