MEGA65 RPG Preview Shows Early Promise

189

In his latest video, Gábor shares a MEGA65 RPG preview that showcases a new work-in-progress role-playing game built for the MEGA65 computer. What makes this project particularly interesting is that it’s written entirely in BASIC65—a modernized version of Commodore BASIC tailored for the MEGA65 platform.

The project is a collaborative effort: Lipi is behind both the coding and the graphics, while the soundtrack comes courtesy of Gurce. While the game is still in early development, the MEGA65 RPG preview offers a clear glimpse at the team’s creative direction—blending traditional 8-bit aesthetics with the enhanced capabilities of the MEGA65.

What’s more, the video doesn’t just show off the game itself—it also highlights the custom creation tools being developed alongside it. These tools are also written in BASIC65, giving MEGA65 users an idea of what’s possible when modern tools meet retro inspiration. It’s exciting to watch a new generation of software grow up around this powerful retro-inspired computer, and this MEGA65 RPG preview is a fine example of that energy.

While far from finished, the project is active and can be followed on GitHub, where the source code and updates are being posted:
