MEGA65 Upgrades & Livestream Tease — An Unfiltered Update from RetroCombs

250

RetroCombs popped up with a surprise livestream—unpolished, unscripted, and exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes chaos fans love. The stream started with a casual check-in and quickly shifted into some deep tinkering on his MEGA65, revealing a few upgrades, a lot of tech frustration, and some exciting news about an upcoming project that’s still under wraps.

RetroCombs has been working closely with the MEGA65 platform and recently updated both the core and ROM, not without hiccups. The process brought up some display and sound glitches, which he eventually traced back to his video capture hardware. His older Cloner Alliance Box Pro wasn’t playing nicely with the latest firmware, but swapping it for a Box Pro Pocket smoothed things out.

A big part of the stream focused on how far the MEGA65 has come. With recent builds supporting network access, connecting and transferring files over a local network has become refreshingly straightforward. No more unplugging SD cards and dealing with unwanted macOS dotfiles. Instead, tools like MEGA65 Connect allow for easy file transfers directly from a Mac or PC.

He also gave a quick rundown on how to flash new cores, load the MegaPET core, and experiment with alternate setups like the C64 and even Commodore PET modes. But he made it clear: for him, the MEGA65 is strictly a Commodore box—no ZX Spectrum cores here, thank you very much.

A lot is coming up—including a MEGA65 video premiere followed by a live deep-dive stream. It’ll all be tied to the secret project he’s been hinting at. So if retro hardware, homebrew tech, or just unscripted nerdy chaos is your thing, this is one you’ll want to catch.
