The next C64 OS update, version 1.07, brings several innovative features that enhance usability and introduce modern conveniences to the classic Commodore 64 experience. Here’s an overview of some key features now available in C64 OS.
Large Mouse Pointers
With version 1.07, users now have the option to double the size of the mouse pointer for better visibility. This new feature takes advantage of the VIC-II chip’s capability to display double-sized sprites, originally discovered through a fortunate accident during development. To access this option, users can open the Mouse Utility, select their desired pointer while holding the CONTROL key, and save the setting. This preference is retained across sessions, ensuring the pointer size matches user preferences every time they boot up. Additionally, the OS now explicitly resets the VIC-II sprite size registers during a fast reboot to reflect this setting, enhancing accessibility and giving the user interface a modern feel.
MText Links to Utilities
MText, C64 OS’s proprietary text format, offers styling and formatting options, including text alignment, emphasized text, and hyperlinks. In the latest update, the TextView Utility has been enhanced to support linking directly to other Utilities, opening up new possibilities for interaction and integration across applications. This feature enables seamless launching of Utilities via specially formatted links, enriching the ways users can navigate and utilize the OS.
Runtime Rebuild of Utilities Menu
Another powerful addition in version 1.07 is the ability to dynamically rebuild the Utilities menu at runtime. Previously, the Utilities menu was compiled only at boot from a source file located in the system settings directory. Now, with a simple click of the refresh button in the Utilities Utility, users can edit and update this menu on the fly. This enhancement enables quicker customization and flexibility without the need for a full reboot, streamlining workflows and reducing interruptions for users.
These updates reflect the ongoing refinement of C64 OS, adding modern convenience while remaining true to the Commodore 64’s unique capabilities.
