Nordischsound Covers Balrog’s Theme on C64 SID, Inspired by Yūzō Koshiro

In a new video release, Nordischsound brings a fresh take to a classic tune with a Commodore 64 SID version of Balrog’s theme from Street Fighter II. But instead of sticking to the original arcade track by Yoko Shimomura, this rendition leans into the stylized 2003 remix by Yūzō Koshiro from the Street Fighter Tribute Album.

Nordischsound set out to capture the character and rhythm of Koshiro’s remix—known for its punchy energy and layered instrumentation—while translating it through the expressive, gritty voice of the SID chip. The result is a version that feels right at home on the C64, balancing homage and creative reinterpretation.

The performance doesn’t try to mimic the original note-for-note but instead channels the mood of Koshiro’s arrangement into the limited but iconic 8-bit palette. Fans of chiptune, Street Fighter, and classic Commodore sound design will find plenty to enjoy here.
