Norman Yen’s Which Rules the Night Demo on the Foenix F256K

Norman Yen is cooking up something special for retro enthusiasts: an upcoming game titled “Which Rules the Night” for the Foenix F256K computer system. He’s chosen to code the entire project in classic 6502/65816 assembly language, bringing an authentic old-school feel to the gameplay.

To enhance the experience, Norman cleverly modded an inexpensive retro USB gamepad, enabling it to utilize the additional buttons needed for the F256. He discovered that finding commercial joysticks compatible with the Foenix’s extra button mapping was surprisingly tough. However, there’s a great solution: the Unijoysticle adapter. This handy device seamlessly integrates modern wireless controllers—like PS4 gamepads—mapping their extra buttons perfectly to the Foenix systems, including the F256, C256, and A2560.

For those craving multiplayer sessions, Foenix Retro Systems offers another exciting accessory. Their adapter allows gamers to connect up to four SNES or NES gamepads alongside the two standard joystick ports, bringing the total supported controllers to an impressive six. Perfect for gaming nights with friends!

As promising as “Which Rules the Night” sounds, Norman admits there’s still plenty to polish. He’s currently refining collision detection, enemy AI, and various gameplay elements. It might be a work in progress, but it’s certainly shaping up to be a nostalgic treat for retro gaming fans everywhere.
