Developer wbochar recently had an epiphany, leading to the resolution of two longstanding UI bugs, which have now been addressed in the latest update.

Petmate is a cross-platform PETSCII drawing program originally developed by Janne Hellsten (nurpax). The last official release by Janne was version 0.8.4.

In 2020, wbochar began making bug fixes to a personal version of the software, eventually expanding the project with new features. After reaching out to Janne Hellsten for permission to continue development, wbochar received approval to proceed. This new iteration, starting at version 9, has been rebranded as Petmate 9.

A key advantage of Petmate 9 is that it can be installed alongside the original version, allowing users to utilize both editions without conflict.

Recent Features and Updates (v0.9.6b)

  • Zoom behavior adjustment – Previously, zoom was included in the undo chain; now, it is excluded for improved usability (credit: Bepp).
  • Improved color selection shortcuts – The TAB key now functions similarly to CTRL for color selection, aligning more closely with VICE keyboard input conventions. Users can now press TAB + 1-8 for lower colors and CTRL + 1-8 for upper colors (akin to the Commodore key on real hardware).
