Repairing the Worst Commodore 64 Motherboard

225

In his latest video, Retro is the New Black host Wolfgang tackles what he calls the Worst Commodore 64 Repair of his career. The project begins with a lifeless C64 motherboard that only shows a black screen. From the start, it’s obvious this machine has major issues, with scorched traces, damaged sockets, and multiple dead chips.

Using his trusted C64 Intern book and detailed schematics, Wolfgang begins the long repair process. He removes every IC, cleans the board, and tests each component. Soon, he discovers that almost every logic chip is either dead or unstable. With patience, he starts replacing one faulty part after another. Each fix brings progress, but new problems appear at every step.

As the Worst Commodore 64 Repair continues, Wolfgang documents every twist and setback. He finds broken traces, failed multiplexers, and a resistor far out of tolerance. Even the VIC chip overheats, forcing more troubleshooting. However, he never gives up. Through steady work and careful testing, he finally isolates the last bad part—resistor R100. After replacing it, the C64 powers up and displays a working screen.

The Worst Commodore 64 Repair isn’t just a technical challenge; it’s a story of persistence and patience. Wolfgang’s humor and determination shine through as he revives what looked like a hopeless case. By the end, the once-dead motherboard lives again, proving that perseverance and methodical testing can restore even the most broken machine.
