Restoring the Commodore CDTV: A Full Teardown & Upgrade

107

In the latest episode of Chris Edwards Restoration, Chris takes a deep dive into the Commodore CDTV—more than just an Amiga 500 in a fancy case. This was Commodore’s ambitious attempt at a home theater set-top box, blending multimedia with computing in a way that was ahead of its time. But, as with many vintage machines, keeping it in top shape requires some hands-on work.

One of the key repairs on Chris’s list is replacing the faceplate cables that control both the infrared (IR) functionality and the clock display. To do this, he’s going all in—tearing the entire system down for a full inspection and breakdown of everything he’s worked on so far.

Chris also has a few upgrades in mind. About a year ago, he picked up a Bluetooth module that’s been waiting for installation. On top of that, he’s got a battery-backed clock module, courtesy of Simon Marston. This was a thoughtful gift from Simon after Chris helped repair his VR 3000 machine some time ago. Now, it’s finally time to put it to use and bring the CDTV one step closer to perfection.
