ROGUEish C64 Dungeon Adventure

174

BastichB returns with another Rapid Fire review featuring the ROGUEish C64 Adventure from Syntax Error Software. Designed by Paul Nichols and released in October 2025, this roguelike dungeon crawler delivers quick action and classic charm. Inspired by Badger Punch’s Rogue64 and Roguecraft, the game streamlines the genre for smoother play on the Commodore 64.

Simple Yet Engaging Gameplay

The ROGUEish C64 adventure uses joystick-only control, making it easy to pick up and play. Players climb a deadly tower filled with traps, treasures, and monsters. Every level is procedurally generated, ensuring a new challenge with each attempt. Combat is turn-based, so each move counts. However, the lack of constant menus keeps the action moving quickly.

Loot and Progression

Collecting loot is key to survival. Items can boost stats or grant special abilities, adding light strategy without slowing things down. Between levels, shops offer new weapons, armor, and potions. These breaks provide time to recover before diving deeper into the tower’s dangers. The balance between simplicity and depth makes every run enjoyable.

Graphics and Sound

The visuals use clean, high-resolution tiles that suit the C64 perfectly. The interface keeps everything visible at once, from maps to inventory. Nordischsound’s medieval SID track sets the tone, while Paul Nichols adds fitting sound effects. The presentation is neat and functional, supporting the gameplay rather than distracting from it.

Available Now

ROGUEish runs smoothly on real hardware, TheC64 Mini and Maxi, and emulators like VICE. A physical edition is available from KA Plus on disk and tape, while the digital version can be found on Itch.io.

Fans of classic roguelikes will find this one worth their time.
