The TeensyROM for C64 brings instant file access and cartridge emulation to the Commodore 64. In the featured video, Travis Smith introduces this versatile device powered by the Teensy 4.1 microcontroller.
This compact cartridge loads files directly from USB drives, SD cards, or internal flash memory. It runs .prg files instantly and emulates .crt cartridge formats, including 8K, 16K, and Ultimax. As a result, it simplifies software access on real hardware.
Unlike traditional solutions, the TeensyROM for C64 connects via Ethernet to sync the system clock. This feature adds modern convenience to a classic platform. Travis also provides a C# desktop app for Windows that lets users send files from a PC.
So far, only NTSC C64 machines have been tested. However, future updates may include PAL support and onboard USB and Ethernet ports. These improvements aim to eliminate dongles and external cabling.
Version 0.1 of the TeensyROM PCB is fully functional and ready for testing. Travis continues to refine the design and expand compatibility with more systems and file types.
Thanks to its quick load times and flexible storage options, the TeensyROM for C64 is a smart addition to any retro setup. It supports modern workflows without needing floppies or cassette tapes.
For developers, the ability to emulate cartridge ROMs and test .prg files without delays is a huge benefit. For collectors, it offers reliable access to software archives stored on standard flash media.
