Unboxing the 8BitDo C64-Style Keyboard – A Retro Gaming and Typing Dream

227

In this episode of RETRO is the New Black, Wolfgang unboxes and reviews the 8BitDo C64-style mechanical keyboard, a retro-inspired keyboard designed for PC users. While working on a 3D-printed mechanical keyboard replacement for the Commodore 64 using the Mechboard 64 PCB, Wolfgang takes a break to check out this newly arrived piece of hardware.

The 8BitDo C64 keyboard offers multiple connectivity options, including USB-C, 2.4GHz wireless, and Bluetooth. It comes with a detachable joystick and oversized buttons, resembling the Competition Pro style, making it an excellent choice for both typing and gaming. The keyboard features Kailh White switches, similar to the Famicom-themed 8BitDo keyboard, and stays true to the classic C64 keycap design.

Despite having an American layout, which might not be ideal for European users, Wolfgang is thoroughly impressed by the build quality, typing feel, and nostalgic design. Given its high demand and limited availability, he recommends grabbing one if you can find it.
