In the latest More Fun Fixing It video, a strange package arrives from Paul—aka Universal Retro Boss. Inside? A heavily altered Commodore 64 that raises more questions than answers.
Paul collects retro systems mainly for the software, often passing the hardware along to be repaired. This time, he’s sent a C64 that looks like it was spray-painted in the dark and modded with all the finesse of a garden shed project.
There are mystery switches, hand-drilled holes, a daughterboard wedged into the ROM socket, and a top case that’s cracked beyond saving. One key even has its stem snapped clean off. Despite all this, power flows, and the board boots—sometimes.
After pulling and reseating the socketed chips, removing the questionable add-ons, and giving everything a good clean, the machine eventually comes to life… inconsistently. Video out works occasionally, sound is hit or miss, and the CIAs show signs of misbehavior.
The real question is: what should be done with it? Clean and restore it to stock? Or leave the mods as part of its strange charm? The video takes you through every detail and invites your input.
