Zelda Theme Reimagined on Commodore 64 by Nordischsound

194

Nordischsound is back with another Commodore 64 remix, this time taking on one of the most recognizable themes in gaming: the overworld music from The Legend of Zelda. But this isn’t just another retro-inspired remix—it’s built entirely on actual 8-bit hardware from 1982. Every sound you hear in the video comes straight from the SID chip inside the Commodore 64.

This isn’t about modern plugins or digital emulation. Nordischsound wires the entire performance through the original C64 sound engine, channeling the distinct tones and quirks of the SID. That includes pulse waves with drifting filters, rich arpeggios, and those unmistakable crisp leads that sound like they’re pulled straight from a ‘zine-era demo disk.

The result is a version of Koji Kondo’s classic that feels completely at home on 8-bit hardware. It’s familiar but filtered through a sound chip that gives the theme a new texture—less orchestral and more raw, but no less melodic. The SID’s imperfections don’t detract—they shape the sound in ways that feel organic to the era it comes from.

If you’re into classic game soundtracks, chip music, or just curious how far someone can push the C64’s audio hardware, this is worth hearing. And yes, that “crunchy” SID character is very much present.
